Congratulations

Vice President Ed Gold was awarded the James M. (Jim) Webster Perpetual Trophy from the Southern California Yachting Association as the individual who, through the Santa Monica Bay Sailing Foundation, has demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship and an outstanding contribution to yachting for 2023.

Sailing Scholarships

Summer programs are quickly filling up in Marina del Rey and once again Santa Monica Bay Sailing Foundation is reaching out into the community and helping support youth sailing by funding a variety of sailing scholarships for grant applicants.  SMBSF has a history of funding between $10,000 and $20,000 per year in requests for young sailors whose family can use the support for a variety of reasons.  Grants are provided through an online application process which goes through review at monthly board of director meetings.  In addition, the program director of each sailing program will be a recommended sponsor and help the applicant fill out the proper grant request to send in.  Requests are usually for a full session at one of the Marina del Rey Yacht Club junior programs.  In 2024, SMBSF will be funding sailors attending DRYC, SMWYC, and CYC.  Applicants need to be attending a local program within the Santa Monica Bay area which is described as from Westlake Village to King Harbor.

Coaching News

SMBSF once again helped with funding for several youth sailors attending the CISA clinic down in Alamitos Bay.  This high-level training is for the most competitive youth sailors who are accepted by resume.  The Foundation is proud to have funded more than $2,000 to attend last year’s clinic.

Competition News

2024 will see Marina del Rey young sailors travel throughout the world including Europe, South America, the Caribbean, and India.  It is with great pride that SMBSF helped fund over $30,000 in supportive grants for application fees, charter boats, and coaching, last year.
